The Complete Best Practice Handbook

The Complete Best Practice Handbook

Member Price £30.00 - Non Member Price £40.00

UKBI's popular series of good practice guides, have been combined into one publication, detailing the basics of business incubation, through to developing your environment, putting in place the management team and developing services to support your clients. A must for any professional!

Chapter 1: What Is Business Incubation? goes right back to basics. Although the term ‘business incubation’ is widely used, there is still a lot of confusion around what it really means. This introductory guide provides a definition of business incubation as well as an introduction to the core principles. It also gives an insight into the different types of incubation environments, their objectives and roles.

Chapter 2: Building Firm Foundations: The Bricks and Mortar of Business Incubation This chapter introduces some good practices in the ‘bricks and mortar’ elements of incubation and gives pointers on how to get the design of the incubator right in order to meet its core objectives. The guide is focused primarily on the ‘purpose-built’ incubator, but there are elements of good practice that will be useful to those re-using an existing building. The process of developing a new incubation facility is explored from inception, through to designing a brief, configuring and designing the space to maximum effect, and the legislation involved.

Chapter 3: The Key Building Blocks Highlighting the importance of feasibility studies, how to develop a clear and realistic set of objectives by which to structure its activities and measure its success, and the importance of marketing the incubator. Like all entrepreneurial ventures, an incubator also needs to have a robust financial plan and access to adequate and sustainable sources of finance. This guide describes the ways in which incubators are funded and some of the financial models that can be used. This chapter then identifies the qualities and skills that are necessary for a successful incubation management team, and outlines the key roles and functions that exist within the incubation team. Finally, it highlights the importance of having an appropriate and supportive Board of Directors.

Chapter 4: Developing the Business Support Infrastructure A key element of the business incubation environment is the provision of business support services. The amount and type of business support required will be influenced greatly by the nature of the clients and their specific needs. Some services are important regardless of client type (e.g. business planning). Other services are more specialised and only required by specific client groups (e.g. intellectual property protection). Good practice incubators offer a range of services broad enough to be of use to all of their clients and specialist services to meet individual needs.

Chapter 5: Preparing a Marketing Plan for your incubator. This starts with some marketing basics, including discussions of markets, marketing, marketing segmentation, the marketing plan document, and market research. With these basics provided, the five steps to developing a marketing plan are presented. Using this approach mix of marketing elements can be determined for your incubator.

The Business Incubator Managers Handbook

Member Price £30.00 - Non Member Price £45.00

As the leading body for Business Incubation in the United Kingdom, UK Business Incubation has amassed a huge library of documents and best practice from leading Business Incubators from around the world. Over the years our members have asked us many questions, which we have always endeavoured to answer. We have noticed that a lot of questions are asked again and again, such as “do you have a good example of a tenancy agreement?” or “I need to write a marketing plan, can you help?” Most of these common questions have also been raised during our popular training and development  workshops, and we have produced a range of factsheets that our members can download from our website to provide help and guidance for some of these common questions.

This handbook has been produced to bring together this range of factsheets, along with a collection of commonly requested forms and documents to provide an “off the shelf” resource for Business IncubationProfessionals, both old and new.
